Case Studies

Phoebus Software / Atom Bank
Finding safe hands for mortgage API re-development

Phoebus Software is a market-leading supplier of banking software, supporting personal and commercial borrowing and lending activities through a banking platform product combined with client-specific services.

In early 2020, Phoebus were commissioned to re-develop mortgage APIs for their client, Atom Bank, but faced a hard deadline.

At this time, Mistral Technologies had been working on development projects for Phoebus for over six months and had further inspired confidence within Phoebus by collaborating with their technical lead to resolve some difficult technical problems.

It was a natural fit for Mistral Technologies to take on the re-development of the Atom APIs, particularly so because we had participated in the development of the original APIs some four years earlier.

We liaised with the project team at Atom Bank to derive a new software architecture and API design, before developing the new APIs to Phoebus’ technical specifications, delivering completed software with comprehensive automated testing within agreed timescales.

For Phoebus, having confidence that their client relationship is in safe hands is paramount. Mistral Technologies is proud to be a trusted development services provider for Phoebus.

ITG Connect / Jaguar Land Rover
JLR faces losing sales leads globally

ITG Connect is a digital agency and the go-to supplier for Jaguar Land Rover’s online marketing. They are responsible for Jaguar and Land Rover websites including the sophisticated car configurator components.

When a US-based software-as-a-service supplier gave notice they were closing down, JLR faced the prospect of their web forms going off-line. This particular software system was responsible for collecting internet sales leads and would severely impact sales of Jaguar and Land Rover cars across 127 countries.

JLR turned to ITG Connect to develop replacement software services within critically short timescales. In turn, through personal recommendation, ITG Connect called in Mistral Technologies to assist.

With the help of Mistral Technologies’ Principal Developer, ITG Connect was able to develop in-house software services to keep JLR’s web forms connected before the third-party software was decommissioned.

Building on this strong relationship foundation, Mistral Technologies went on to work on a number of other projects with ITG Connect for JLR.

Taking JLR's web forms platform to the next level, Mistral Technologies used cloud infrastructure and modern web APIs to construct a test harness to minimise defects across hundreds of form variants.

Demonstrating a broad skill base that includes React and Javascript web skills, Java and Spring back-end technologies and OAuth authentication, we went on to help drive development of JLR’s Customer Portal web application.

Of Mistral Technologies’ Principal Developer, Richard Wilson, JLR’s Product Manager, Adam Garner, said

Richard is one of the most talented people I have ever worked with. I had the pleasure of working with him for 2 years across a number complex projects at Jaguar Land Rover. Richard added value every day, he was able to solve complex problems quickly and was always a key driver to making our projects a success. Richard has earned my highest recommendation.
Keytree / Severn Trent Water
Fixing a broken design

Keytree is a successful SAP technology consultancy that, besides SAP, also provides development services into many business sectors, including Energy and Utilities.

In 2018, Keytree was engaged by Severn Trent Water to develop a web application for initiating commercial water connections.

Impressed with our skills and experience in this area, Keytree in turn engaged Mistral Technologies to assist with development of the Web UI, a React application.

By this time, however, the project was behind schedule and struggling to move forward.

Our Principal Developer quickly identified flaws in the design of the application and poorly implemented code. As well as causing existing problems, the design would not satisfy the requirements of future planned functionality.

The concerns and proposed solution were presented to the project’s senior technical managers, who were then faced with a hard decision to carry on regardless or accept the proposed alternative design and rework the application. Promised delivery dates were looming.

The decision was made to commit two weeks to re-developing the front-end application and our Principal Developer was tasked with the work. After two weeks intensive effort, the new front-end design was operational with a clean, well-structured and well-tested code base. Functionality was migrated onto the new code base and development velocity rapidly accelerated.

With the pressure now off the front-end application development, Keytree were able to take advantage of our developer’s wide-ranging skills to bolster the back-end development effort.

This maturity of skills and experience is what allows Mistral Technologies to add extra value to our clients’ projects.

Locator

GPS is great for finding your location outdoors - what we wanted was a way to locate people indoors.

This research project aims to use machine learning on signals from low-energy bluetooth beacons to locate people indoors to the accuracy of a room or defined office area.

SMOG

SMOG is an open-source Java project supporting the matching of object graphs.

When writing unit tests it is common to want to check multiple properties on an object and nested objects.

The SMOG library integrates with Hamcrest to allow fluent test assertions examining multiple properties on a graph of objects, reporting mismatches for all properties with unexpected values.
